PostSubject: Divine Retribution - (Ch.5) Experiment SI-004   Tue Jul 07, 2009 3:05 am

------------------------------------
Subject - SI-004

Description - Male stag

Experiment - Subject will be suspended in a water tube to test simulated drowning.
------------------------------------

There was a long time of silence. The deer sat in their cages, none saying a word. The air seemed a little colder than it had been, and at once Tuna began to shiver. Zephyr watched her fellow deer sadly, knowing there was nothing that could be done to help.

Zephyr..., she heard her name called. The doe sat up and looked at the others, who all were resting or looking away. She lowered her ears and tried to rest herself.

Zephyr..., again her name was called. She stood, looking at the others.

"What's wrong?", Ravenflight asked her. The doe blinked and looked around again, "Did someone say my name?", she asked.

The deer shook their heads, and Zephyr lowered her head, sitting down once more.

Zephyr..., she heard it a third time, but she softly closed her eyes, and in her mind, she asked, "Dad...is that you calling me?"

At that moment, the door to the room opened. The men came in, and chose their deer.

Silent stood as the men opened his cage. "Come on.", one of the men said, the others with their tazers ready. Silent sighed and reluctantly stepped out of the cage.

The others watched as another was led away. Liëka was the one to call out to him, "Be brave, Silent.", she said. The stag stopped and looked over to her - she could see his eyes were deeply saddened. The stag was nudged and he continued down the hallway.

"Something's not right here...", Zephyr said after the door had closed.

After his physical, the scientists led the grey stag into a larger room. In the center of the room was a suspension tube that connected to the floor and the ceiling. Wires were attached at the top to various outlets, and inside was a breathing mask that hung down. Small holes on the inside allowed anything from various gasses to water to be pumped into the tube. The tube had a doorway that allowed a test subject inside, where they would stand on a platform with vents that could be opened and closed.

Around the tube were several workstations, each having a computer that could monitor the chemical levels and ultimately control the experiment. There were scientists already stationed at these computers who were eager to test on the newly arrived deer. Silent was led toward the tube in the center, where the scientists stopped him, "The mask has to come off.", one of them said.

At once two of the scientists reached toward Silent's mask. The deer struggled and turned his head away, until the men got a hand of it and pulled it off. They saw the stag's true face, and at once noticed part of his jaw was missing. Those standing before the deer at once looked at one another, all thinking the same thing - there might be a problem with this experiment.

"Come on, people!", another scientist came in, one of the ones that ran operations, "We're on a tight schedule. Hook that animal up and let's get this experiment done." The ones next to Silent didn't reconsider their actions - they at once forced the stag into the tube and hooked the breathing apparatus to his face. They at once shut the door to the tube. He stood upright for the experiment.

"Alright," the head scientist said, "20 percent sedative now." One of the scientists at the workstations began to type on a keyboard, and within moments, a gas came out in the holes at the top of the tube. Silent panicked, and began to press on the walls of the tube, but immediately the gas began to affect him and his muscles began to relax as he became drowsy.

"Good. Close the vents and proceed with water suspension." The vents at the bottom closed, and the holes that first sprayed the gas out now were pouring out water. Silent rubbed his eyes, coughing and writhing as the cold water dripped down his body. The water quickly collected at his feet and rose at a fast rate. Silent choked for a moment as a few drops of water went down his face and into the mask where the missing part of his jaw was.

The scientists didn't realize that there was an open hole uncovered by the breathing mask.

The water had gone neck high when Silent did the only thing he could think of - he cried out a prayer to the Twin Gods as the water covered his face. When the tube was completely filled, the scientist gave the order, "Shut off the oxygen, ten seconds."

Silent struggled as the water started to fill the mask covering his mouth. At once the oxygen shut off, and he breathed the last bit of air before he started choking. The stag writhed, the water entering his mouth and clogging his throat, while there was no air to breathe in the mask. This lasted well past the ten seconds, and the lead scientist said, "Oxygen now."

Oxygen did pump into the water-filled mask, but only formed bubbles that never reached Silent's mouth. The stag struggled weakly, and the scientists saw that he wasn't breathing and at once looked back at the lead scientist. "Dammit, I said oxygen!", he said at once. "It's pumping. I don't know what the problem is.", one of the others replied. "Shit, we're going to lose him.", another said. "Abort! Drain it! Now!", the lead scientist gave the order, and immediately the vents at the bottom of the tube opened.

They watched as the deer was already lifeless, and his body floated down the tube and came to a rest on the bottom as the last of the water drained. The scientists looked back at their leader when they realized that Silent had drowned in the experiment.

"What happened?", one of the superiors of the organization asked them. "Well, we lost him because we didn't know...", the lead scientist tried to explain, but his superior interrupted him, "Who said we were on a tight schedule? Why wasn't his mask checked?"

"We didn't know the mask would not fit.", another scientist answered. There was a moment of silence before the superior sighed and said, "Alright, put the body in storage. We'll use him for something else."

The superior left, and the scientists looked back at the water-drenched corpse in the tube.

-=|~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~|=-

"Not like this...", Silent said, "I don't want to die..."

He awoke to find himself resting on the chest of another, "...Quad?"

The stag smiled, "Rest now, Silent. You've had a good life, don't worry about what just happened.", he replied. The two sat in a soft meadow, illuminated only by a little light from the dusk sky.

Silent noticed his mask was back on his face, and his fur was dry. He knew it was already too late, and he closed his eyes in deep sadness.

Quad nuzzled his friend a little, "Your story doesn't end here. Have faith in the Gods, they will make sure your new life will be better."

Silent mustered the courage to reply, "I understand, Quad..."
